ENABLED TRAVEL

Travel has for ages been about venturing out and connecting on a human level. All the way from Marco Polo to Columbus to Ibn Battuta, the world has drawn inspiration to explore, treading far and wide, with open minds and warm hearts.

Being differently abled or physically challenged should not limit one travelling around the world. ‘‘Travel for all’’ is at the core of our business and we strive to create integrated travel solutions for travellers with disabilities and special needs to provide a hassle-free travel experience. While accessible-friendly and barrier-free is not always well understood, we aim to un-wrap such concepts, provide suitable solutions and deliver them to our clients.

Almost a third of the world’s population is affected by some sort of mobility issue, signifying a huge potential for travel and tourism in this segment; however, it still remains vastly under-serviced. Developing accessible tourism in a sustainable manner is an on-going endeavour gaining momentum and it involves a collaborative effort from all stakeholders including Governments, tourism boards, and travel designers.

The integration of enabled travel into mainstream tourism and the creation of a barrier free holiday is one of our key focus areas for the coming years and we are committed to its success. A one stop inclusive travel experience is the ultimate goal.

TRAVEL TALES

Nancy Lieberman, Wall Street’s dynamic M&A lawyer, dons another hat – an intrepid globe-trotter in a wheelchair. A tragic skiing accident back in 2017 in Colorado left her a quadriplegic. A work-in-progress robotics program allowed her to regain, a certain degree of upper arm movement; unfortunately, though, she didn’t have the same luck with her legs. Nancy then said hello to her wheelchair and a new journey began. She has so far travelled to more than 20 countries thus far and has many more on her list. It was our privilege to curate her holiday when she planned to visit India in January 2020!

While India is not particularly a disability-friendly country, we chalked out an hour-by-hour itinerary for every single day for Nancy enabling a smooth holiday. Right from choosing the seat on the plane and arranging for escort service at the gate of the aircraft, we had it all planned well in advance.

For most monuments and sights that were part of her itinerary, in collaboration with the local authorities and partners, we arranged for temporary ramps to be erected to allow easy entry and exit. We also ensured that her vehicle was especially adapted by qualified mechanical engineers for a comfortable ride.

In Delhi, a visit to the wheel chair accessible parts of the Bangla Sahib Gurudwara was arranged giving her an insight intothe Sikh religion and worship. She could also enjoy parts around the Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb. No trip to India is complete without shopping and Nancy had her fill in Delhi. Most of the shops and markets she visited were wheelchair accessible. She also enjoyed visiting the Amer fort and the Palaces in Jaipur & Udaipur with special accessibility arrangements.

Later, once back in New York, Nancy conveyed to us that, it was one of the best trips she has ever taken and that she had a fantastic time in India!

We are happy to be collaborating with the Barrier-Free Tourism Project implemented by Kerala Tourism Department that has received the special honour as “Emerging Global Destination” in the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Accessible Destination Awards 2019.

Kerala is also the first state to become elderly and disabled-friendly in the country.
