Goa’s tryst with globalization is long and multihued. As a hotbed of the mercantile movement, the coastal destination has witnessed a mixture of foreign influences from Arabian, Egyptian, Persian and Portuguese visitors. Goa’s grand Portuguese villas attract eyeballs as one of the most impressive remnants of a 450-year old foreign rule. Visiting these heritage mansions and interacting with the proud owners is like stepping on the threshold of time.
Over four and a half centuries of Portuguese colonization, Hindu Brahmins converted to Christianity built palatial residences all over Goa. Some of these grand houses are now heritage structures, with windows that open into a vivid Portuguese past. Local and Western sensibilities fuse in their wide verandas, open inner courtyards, private chapels, European chandeliers and Azulejos tile draped walls. Architecture buffs can visit some of the famed Portuguese mansions and admire the interiors that brim with inspiration.
The most treasured of these mansions, the Braganza House, is located at ChandorVillage in South Goa. 450 years and running, it is a living museum of precious gems, including Belgian chandeliers, Macao porcelain, Chinese ebony, Venetian stained glass, Portuguese tiles; Flemish wood and even a ballroom of Italian marble. The generously proportioned residence flanks the full length of one side of the village square.
The other heritage mansion on the agenda is the intimate Palacio de Deao, a 213-year old property built by a Portuguese nobleman from Braga, who was the Dean of the Church, and founder of Quepem town. The house is an amalgamation of Hindu and Portuguese architecture with oyster-shell panes, a colonial-era stamp collection and Braga-esque geometrical gardens, complete with a pond, a waterfall, and even a river. Feel at home as you taste Indo-Portuguese delicacies and local favouritesin a belvedere at the back, overlooking the Kushavati River. Second helpings are inevitable. En route back, astop at the Margao fish market serves as the cherry on top.
