Sultan Ahmad Shah’s 15th-century’s city, now Gujarat’s bustling capital, sprawls along the Sabarmati River banks, showcasing historical riches, exquisite craftsmanship, cultural treasures and thriving entrepreneurial legacy. Proudly labelled India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City, Ahmedabad’s antiquity continues to sparkle through gracefully sculpted monuments, traditional wooden architecture and old neighbourhoods frozen in time, even as it strides boldly into the future as a modern metropolis.
A private full-day tour is an ideal way to get familiar with the multi-dimensional highlights of the city over different eras in time.
Hathisingh Jain Temple, the largest Jain temple in Ahmedabad dedicated to the 15th Jain Tirthankar is a religious institution and also sheer poetry in white marble because of its intricate ornamentation.
Architectural wonderment is the theme of the 15th-century Adalaj Stepwell, located on the city outskirts. Heavily adorned with elaborate friezes, fine motifs and deity carvings, the five-storied octagonal sandstone structure built in the Solanki style is steeped in stories of love, war and betrayal.
Sarkhej Roza, a 15th-century complex of tombs and palaces is pure eye-candy for its blend of Hindu, Jain and Islamic styles. Lovingly described as Ahmedabad’s Acropolis, it appeals to the inner aesthetic with its stone lattices, calm pavilions, expansive courtyards and the harem facing a vast stepped tank. The natural light-and-shadow show from the jails is enticing.
Stop at the 16th-century Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, an ode to the architectural legacy of the African diaspora in India. The mosque attracts eyeballs for its lace-quality latticework windows, delicately carved with geometrical and foliage designs, and especially for the Siddi Syed Ni Jali with the ‘Tree of Life’ motif, the unofficial symbol of Ahmedabad.
A flash of patriotic inspiration is inevitable at Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram. Among other historic memorabilia, this sanctuary of calm, located on a peaceful stretch of the River Sabarmati, is a must-visit to see thousands of letters to and by Gandhiji, which ‘literally’ recreate the bygone era of the freedom movement.
The promenade at Sabarmati River Front makes a perfect spot for an energizing jog or a relaxing evening stroll. Part of a planned 22km urban rejuvenation project, it features eleven bridges connecting the old and new parts of the city.
