Sink into antiquity with a guided Heritage Walk in the 600-year-old walled city of Ahmedabad, where traditional neighbourhoods (pols) still stand shrouded in timelessness. Sample a slice of the past as you explore intricately carved wooden havelis (mansions) of wealthy merchants, locate hidden temples and step into ancient squares in India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City.
The Heritage Walking Tour begins from the vibrantly painted Swaminarayan Temple, a great example of exquisite wood carving. Winding through the narrow alleyways of the Pols (gated neighbourhoods) in the old city, learn about the cultural traditions of the close-knit community residents and locate common elements like shrines, wells and bird feeders.
Frozen in time, the walled city is a living museum with its Gujarati wooden mansions flaunting an interesting mix of architectural influences, including Maratha, Persian, Mughal and even Baroque styles. In some Pols, one can witness people hand-sewing books or creating hand-crafted artefacts. Navigating the vast pedestrian area on foot, one soon realises that distractions are everywhere. The curious at heart can seek out hidden passageways and learn about the legends associated with them.
Think olfactory overload in the local markets filled with stalls carrying snacks such as Khakhra, Khaman, Khandvi, Dhokla, and Fafda Kadhi. One of the lively attractions is ManekChowk, which transitions from a vegetable market in the morning to a jewellery hub in the afternoon, and a foodie-paradise in the evening. The walk ends at the Jami Masjid, built during the rule of Ahmed Shah, founder of the city. The monument makes an impressive statement with its ‘sultanate architecture’, intricately-calligraphed columns and carved central domes. Hindu and Jain temple influences like lotuses and hanging bell are unmistakable.
