Carved pavilions and overhanging windows of palaces mirror in the glistening water bodies are bountifully scattered over Udaipur. Reverence for water permeates the local culture and reflects in one of the folk art forms of the city, Jal Sanjhi (painting on water). Udaipur is the stage for a unique and ancient art form, Jal Sanjhi, where the canvas is not paper, cloth or wood, but water. According to a legend, the art originated when Radha ( Lord Krishna’s consort) saw his image in a pond and outlined it with flowers as a mark of honour.
This art form is being kept alive in the city by a family of artists and has been perfected over many generations. As part of a long-standing tradition, Jal Sanjhi paintings related to the legend of Lord Krishna are created in Udaipur during the festive season of Navratri ( 9 days of festivities and worship).
On this day tour, watch the fascinating process of Jal Sanghi, starting from the treated water being filled in a flat vessel. The base colour is added to the water and is spread out slowly with the help of a fine sieve, till it floats in a layer. Special rice paper stencils are placed delicately over this base for the actual painting to take shape. Different stencils are used for each step, for instance, to make leaves or petals. A complex painting can take a few days to get completed. If you are an art aficionado, you might be inspired to buy a lovely piece to adorn a special nook in your home as a reminder of your holiday to India.

Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
