The coastal state of Gujarat has been exporting Indian textiles to the world since 1000 BC. Embroidery and beadwork to wooden artefacts and tribal art, Gujarat’s artisans continue to survive the test of time, expressing their uncurbed creativity through folklore and festivals. The crafty-minded traveller can soak up the diverse colours of its rich legacy, not just in the rural hinterland but also in the capital, Ahmedabad, where reputed NGOs and intriguing museums fondly showcase a kaleidoscopic exuberance of traditional crafts.
Gujarat has a magnetic attraction as the home turf of age-old arts and crafts. The state capital, Ahmedabad, itself, offers some unparalleled experiences to appeal to the connoisseur of all things arty-crafty. Make a beeline for the world's best textile museum, The Calico Museum to gloat over displays of rare textiles and exquisite embroidery from the 17th-century onwards.
Another noteworthy pitstop is the Shreyas Museum of Folk Art and Culture, which exhibits textiles as well as toys, crafts, wood carving, metal-work, bead-work, leather-work, costumes, paintings and the performing arts. The collection is the best way to get familiar with art forms from diverse communities like Kathi, Rabari, Ahir, Mer, Charan, Bharvad, Kanbi, Koli, Bhansali, Rajput, Brahmin, Vania, Meghaval, KhojaBohra, Meman, Miana.

Head for the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum to admire manuscripts, miniature paintings, bronzes, coinage and cloth paintings in addition to Indian artefacts from the 2nd-century onwards 20th-century onwards.
Going beyond the galleries, the Art Book Shop is a recommended halt to browse for books on local textiles and crafts.
