Lagoons, lakes, canals, rivers, and inlets lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast create a 900-kilometre network of inland waterways in Kerala. Gliding along these backwaters to taste the laid-back life of the friendly locals is on every traveller’s bucket list when planning a luxury holiday in India.
The backwaters of Kerala are its most spectacular geographical feature, taking second place to almost 600 kilometres of striking coastline. Here, in a world of waterways luxuriant with bending coconut palms, tiny villages lie scattered along the banks, away from the urban cacophony.
Unwind with a backwater cruise in Cochin and float at a leisurely pace on a traditional country boat, punted by hand, savouring the slow pace of life in villages. Everyday routine is on display everywhere around and the riverbank is where all the action is. Witness people harvesting crops, spreading fishing nets, grazing cattle or carrying baskets of produce. See young children bathing and swimming, women washing clothes and drying laundry, coconut climbers and toddy tappers engrossed in work. Straw-roofed houses are punctuated by tiny local churches and covered markets. The thick cover of coconut palms is a common feature all along.
The day tour includes a meal with a host family living on an island in the backwaters, and the chance to get familiar with the local lifestyle, customs and traditions unspoilt by modernity.

As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. The food, chef, and his wife were all exceptional and made for a lovely evening. Also, our expectations were definitely exceeded at a private residence, spending time with the elephants and lunching. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
