Get familiar with the history of Bangalore, right from the time of its foundation as a mud fort by a local chieftain. From imperial palaces and colonial monuments to post-independence landmarks, this tour takes you across the lifespan of one of the country’s most exciting metropolises, down to its current avatar as India’s Silicon Valley, where entrepreneurial energy and startup culture are at the perkiest best.
The roots of Bangalore’s past lie embedded in the story of a 16th-century mud fort built by a local chieftain, KempeGowda. The mud fort is long gone, but its existing four towers still mark the boundaries of the city. Flag off this historic tour from one of these towers located in the Lalbagh Gardens.
Lalbagh Gardens, the pleasure gardens of Tipu Sultan, are an early symbol of the ‘Garden City’. Apart from a wide variety of flora and fauna, it also boasts of a glasshouse, an aquarium and a lake. Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace, located nearby, makes a worthwhile visit for its splendid teak wood architecture. After Tipu Sultan was killed in a battle with the British, the city’s nerve centre shifted to the Military Cantonment Area in the 1800’s.
Discover the neighbourhood where churches, clubs bungalows, barracks and bazaar areas are still reminiscent of a bygone colonial era. During the British era, parts of the city was under the Maharajah of Mysore. Visit his royal residence, the Palace of the Wodeyars to dig deep into the legacy of the family. The Tudor style of architecture conveys a distinctly European look.
After Independence from the British, Bangalore saw the development of the majestic legislative assembly Vidhana Soudha, built with Neo-Dravidian and Indo-Saracenic styles, opposite the British-established Attara Kacheri court. Learn about the architecture of this grand edifice as you cross it and reach the Cubbon Park, a green oasis that offers solace from the fast-pace of the urbanscape.
Finally, drive through one of the city’s technical hubs to get a feel of India’s Silicon Valley and complete a thought-provoking tour spanning several centuries.
