The walled city of Jaipur, nicknamed Pink City, because of its terracotta pink painted buildings, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for being a unique example of 18th-century urban planning by Sawai Jai Singh II. Aside from its eye-candy appeal and blend of architectural styles and cultures, the old town of Jaipur is special as a medieval trade town, where traditions live on as arts and crafts in ancient bazaars (markets).
King Sawai Jai Singh II laid out a master plan for Jaipur’s old city in the 18th-century envisaging a grid of streets divided with 90 degrees angle squares and a maze of symmetrical lanes. Today, the ancient Walled City has been tagged a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its urban planning and the ensemble of traditional architecture. Even with the heavy gridlock and chaos of crowds, the unifying pink paint retains an old-world charm.
The many trade-specific bazaars nestled in the Walled City tempt with their colourful wares, which reflect the rich heritage of age-old arts and crafts. Generations of families have been conducting their business in these narrow streets since the time of the Rajputana royalty. Considered to be among the most vibrant markets in the country, the bazaars within the Walled City of Jaipur are a delight for shopaholics.
Among the most popular lanes in the Walled City are the ones specializing in jewellery, clothing and bangles. Tips from the local guide will help you navigate the overwhelming variety of artefact-loaded stores and learn more about Jaipur’s trading history as you stumble across local artisans at work. Keep the eyes alert during the walking tour, you may miss a hidden temple or an intricately carved mansion hiding in plain sight.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
