Over the centuries, Chennai has evolved into a city where indigenous culture has mixed with colonial colours of the French, Dutch, Portuguese and British eras to create an unusually vibrant palette. The most significant influence in the history of the city is related to the arrival of the British’s East India Company, which saw the emergence of white-painted buildings in the ‘White Town’. In sharp contrast, the ‘Black Town’ (currently George Town), was a bustling hub of markets and trade, where locals lived and worked. Scout for remnants of the past with this city walk in the Black Town, the oldest modern neighbourhood of Chennai.
Let yourself loose in the chaos of crowded markets, sidestep traffic and be distracted by boisterous hawkers in the bazaars of Black Town of Chennapattanam, as the locals call it. The oldest modern neighbourhood of the city is a wanderer’s delight with its impressive buildings that stand wrapped in layers of eventful history from the British Raj.
More than counting landmarks, the walking tour is a headlong plunge into everyday life on the streets, where locals go about their routine, engage with each other while buying, selling and trading. Walking through the neighbourhood, you will notice specialized trade markets, wholesale markets, street stalls and retail shops, all stocking a wide variety of products, as varied as nuts, spices and home implements.
There are a hundred stories hidden in the narrow lanes, waiting to be uncovered. The only question that remains is…how deep you do want to dive?

I must say everything was planned to perfection. Each guide in every city was knowledgeable; especially the guide you arranged for us in Udaipur. Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. The food, chef, and his wife were all exceptional and made for a lovely evening. Also, our expectations were definitely exceeded at a private residence, spending time with the elephants and lunching. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
