The landscape of the coastal state of Odisha is rich with natural treasures like rivers, lakes, mountains and forest. One of the key features of the region is the wetland of Chilika Lake, the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia. Head to the avian wonderland of Mangalajodi in Chilika, just 80 kilometres from the capital city, Bhubaneswar and track down hundreds of local and migratory birds to add an offbeat angle to your holiday to India.
Chilika Lake is a saltwater lake from July to October and an estuarine water lake from November to February, covering an area of 1,165 square kilometres over the districts of Puri, Khurda and Ganjam. Asia's largest brackish water lagoon is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a 60-kilometre narrow strip of marshy islands and sand-flats.
The biodiversity hotspot is loaded with rich natural resources and is the wintering ground for millions of migratory birds, from Russia, Mongolia, Central Asia and South East Asia. The area has around 225 species of fish and more than 500 other fauna species.
Explore the wetlands of Mangalajodi by country boat to spot familiar and unique birds at close range. The day tour also includes the opportunity to witness boat making and fishing net weaving activities at Mangalajodi village.
