The marshes of Sultanpur National Park are an ideal place to spot migratory birds during winter. Birds start arriving by July, but the best time to see hordes of rare species is in the months of October and November. Over 300 avian species have been listed in Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, which is conveniently located within a drive of two hours from Delhi.
Start early and drive to Basai for a photogenic session of birding in water-logged fields, before reaching the Sultanpur National Park. After a scheduled breakfast stop, there will be a guided tour around the lake with an expert birder. Carrying a camera and binoculars is highly recommended.
Spread over an area of 700 acres, the Basai swamp area attracts close to 300 birds annually from all around the world. A wetland-like habitat, it has a variety of reed beds with typha, phragmites and water hyacinth. Ducks and geese, including Greylag and Barheaded as well as rarer ones such as Ruffs, Avocet, Plovers and Stints also flock to the swamp.
A wetland of international importance, the Sultanpur National Park supports more than 220 species of resident, international migratory and local migratory waterbirds during different stages of their life cycles. The site also is home to more than 10 endangered species. Equipped with four watch towers (machans) located at different points, the park offers bird enthusiasts a filed day!
Regular residents in the park include the Common Hoopoe, Paddyfield Pipit, Purple Sunbird, little cormorant, Indian Roller, Spot billed Duck, Painted Stork, White Ibis, Black headed Ibis, Little Egret, Red vented Bulbul, Rose ringed Parakeet, Red/Yellow wattled Lapwing, Laughing Dove, Spotted Owlet, Magpie Robin, Greater Coucal, Weaver Bird, Mynah, and Green Bee Eater.

Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
