Agra rose to fame and fortune in the 16th-century, while it became the capital of the mighty Mughal empire in India and a powerful political hub under the patronage of the imperial dynasty. Splendid architecture altered the complexion of the town and the promise of flourishing trade encouraged art and cultural exchanges. Agra’s ancient bazaars (markets) thrive till today, with a variety of goods that range from spices, fruits, vegetables, textiles, jewellery and artefacts. The boundaries between present and past fade, as you indulge in a heritage walk through the historic town centre of Agra.
Brace for a bewitching brush with the bygone era on a heritage walk in the historic old quarters of Agra, the former capital of the mighty Mughal empire in India. You will commence the walk from the Jama Masjid, located opposite the Agra Fort. Constructed by Emperor Shah Jahan in honour of his daughter Jahanara Begum, the intricately carved red sandstone mosque showcases the influence of Iranian architecture.
Continue to the Mankameshwar Mahadev Temple, which is famous for a silver Lingam (form of idol), before dissolving into a labyrinth of narrow alleyways replete with ornamental building facades huddled together. From accessories that adorn temple deities to the spice market of Rawat Para and the Khoya Gali of Chitti Khana, you will reach Namak Ki Mandi. Spot artisans beating gold and silver to make papery foils for medicinal use in Ayurveda before you reach the Akbari Mosque built by Emperor Akbar as a token of his gratitude on the birth of his son, Jahangir. From here, work your way into the cobbled street of Kinari Bazaar, where dozens of bangle and saree shops tempt shoppers.
While stumbling upon ancient structures and hidden monuments, the heritage walk will also draw you into the enchanting local life on the streets. Shrines filled with devotees, customers gossiping at tea stalls and shopkeepers boisterously announcing their wares, are only a few of the reasons to enjoy this heritage trail in Agra. The walk will end at Jama Masjid.
