Nostalgia is served up in copious amounts in this tour, devoted to what was the largest British Military Garrison in South India during the 1800s. Barracks to bungalows and clubs to churches, every facet of life in the Bangalore Cantonment had a strong European influence back in the days of the British Raj. Discover the past of this fascinating area, where streets have military nomenclature, like Brigade Road, Cavalry Road and Infantry Road.
The experience kicks off at Hatworks Boulevard, a 145-year old heritage bungalow, where headgear was once made for the British and Indian armed forces. Now a chic retail space with boutiques, an art gallery and a coffee shop, it sports original Burma teak doors and terrazzo floors, which add a touch of old-world glamour.
Next on the agenda is the 19th-century St.Marks Cathedral, with colonial architecture, inspired by London’s St.Paul Cathedral. An unmistakable military character is evident from the plaques on its walls. The stained glass windows, marble pulpit and pipe organ are worth a second glance. Drive through the popular M G Road shopping area to arrive at the Holy Trinity Protestant Church. Built with Renaissance style and believed to be the largest military garrison church in South India, it features memorials and tablets that remind of an illustrious past.
From here, the tour goes on along the Old Airport Road, past the area reserved for the Indian Armed Forces to the Ulsoor Lake area, in the north-eastern edge of the city. Look forward to an atmospheric stroll through the Shivaji Nagar bazaar, crossing the street stalls and food vendors. The area is home to landmarks like the Mariamman Temple and St Mary’s Basilica. The thronging Russell Market, dating 1927, flaunting an Indo-Saracenicarchitectural style makes an interesting stop for its flower, vegetable, fruit, fish and meat stalls. The walk ends in the old furniture and bamboo bazaar, a haven for fans of antiques.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. The food, chef, and his wife were all exceptional and made for a lovely evening. Also, our expectations were definitely exceeded at a private residence, spending time with the elephants and lunching. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
