Soak in the vibe of Chandni Chowk - ‘Moonlight Square’, the busiest market area in Delhi, a chaotic jumble of narrow streets crammed with bazaars devoted to dozens of trades, traditional food stalls, crumbling Havelis (mansions) and places of worship. During the time of the Mughal rule, Old Delhi’s beating heart resided in the by lanes of Chandni Chowk. Visualize the vignettes of the area, when Emperor Shahjahan shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi and established the ancient city of Shahjahanabad with the Red Fort (Lal Qila) on the banks of River Yamuna.
When Mughal Emperor Shahjahan set up his capital, Shahjahanabad in Delhi in the 17th-century, he ordered a vast Chowk (Square) with a central pool close to his imperial fort, Lal Qila (red Fort). The credit for the design of the Square goes to his favourite daughter, Jahanara. The main road of Chandni Chowk stands where a freshwater canal ran from the Fort, reflecting the moonlight. Caravanserais, communal bathhouses, lush gardens, intricately carved Havelis (mansions) of merchants and a 120-feet wide, kilometre-long bazaar defined the grace of this splendid neighbourhood, where royal processions, Mushairaas (poetry reciting gathering) and pigeon-flying were everyday activities. Chandni Chowk was the hub of commerce then and continues to be so, even now.
Congestion and chaos add to the nostalgic charm of traversing the tight lanes of the oldest and largest marketplace in the country’s capital, which was heavily bombarded and damaged during the British rule. Get swept away by the hectic pace of business in the many heritage bazaars devoted to different trades, including Dariba Kalan (silver market), Kinari Bazaar (wedding market) and Khari Baoli (Asia’s largest spice market). The epic Paranthewali Galli (Lane of Paranthas, fried unleavened bread) is a must-see for foodies.
