Hampi is a destination that sweeps fans of heritage and architecture off their feet, but its natural treasures are equally compelling. Boulder-strewn hills, lush green valleys and sparkling water bodies of Hampi make it a haven for lovers of the open outdoors. Break the mould with this active tour peppered with adventurous moped drives, energising hill hikes and charming coracle rides. Open your heart to the unspoilt beauty of Hampi’s landscape away from the more popular UNESCO World Heritage site of Vijayanagara.
The geologists’ theory is that gigantic granite monoliths eroding over billions of years have created Hampi’s boulder-strewn landscape. Some of these monoliths fell and crumbled into heaps, while others remained stacked in semi-stable form. Mythology, of course, has a very different explanation.
Choose an alternate way to experience Hampi during a trip to India. Escape the sightseeing fatigue of the Vijayanagara Empire and seek the calm of Hampi’s hills, rivers and open fields. Start on a high note with a hike up from the southern side of Matunga Hill to be rewarded with an uninterrupted view of a spectacular crimson sunrise. On the way back to ground level, reach the ruins of Achyutaraya complex along the riverbanks to discover hidden relief sculptures between the boulders.
Gliding slowly on the Tungabhadra in an old-fashioned coracle, feel the caress of the breeze on your face and contemplate about the slow pace of rural life. On the opposite banks, you will jump onto a moped and driving through the countryside, pass tranquil lakes, wide canals and humble villages en route. The tour will include a scheduled stop at a local shop for fresh breakfast and end at Anegundi Village or Virupapur Gaddi (another hamlet). As a bonus, and with a keen eye, you can spot many species of native birds during this day tour.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
