Look away from the Mughal theme of Agra, which culminates in the timelessness of the Taj Mahal and the might of the Agra Fort to uncover a plethora of colonial gems, dating from the time that the city became the seat of the British government. Take a tour to explore the churches, cemeteries, missionaries, colleges, company gardens and private bungalows in the ancient historic city that stands on the banks of the River Yamuna.
Agra hides many more treasures in its ancient streets beyond Shah Jahan’s opulent ode to Mumtaz Mahal and the intrigue-shrouded Agra Fort. Trace out the remnants of Agra’s colonial past and get familiar with historic stories of the British Raj on this fascinating tour.
The Roman Catholic cemetery, one of the oldest Christian burial grounds in the country, has been a final resting place for European travellers since the 1500s. The highlight of the cemetery is a unique blend of Islamic and colonial sensibilities. Graves have headstones with Persian epitaphs and Islamic motifs. Mughal-style tombs are dressed with crosses. The site is famous for the red sandstone tomb of John Hessing, known as the Red Taj.
Fans of architecture will enjoy the trip to St John’s College, a vision in the Indo-Saracenic style with vast lawns that complement the sprawling splendour. Don’t miss the chance to spot Agra’s Head Post Office, a vintage British bungalow painted in white and red, on the Mall Road in the Cantonment of Agra. The heritage building has an impressive philatelic gallery.
Another noteworthy landmark located within the Cantonment of Agra is the St George’s Cathedral. Adorned in yellow ochre stucco with white trimmings, it features a carved white sandstone screen and an altar decorated with Agra’s famous marble inlay work.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. The food, chef, and his wife were all exceptional and made for a lovely evening. Also, our expectations were definitely exceeded at a private residence, spending time with the elephants and lunching. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
