From fiery Andhra flavours to delicate Mughlai influences, from food markets to street stalls, this tour offers an unbeatable buffet to appeal to the eternal epicurean.

TOUR ITINERARY

Hailing from the Nizam’s era, Mir Alam Market is one of the oldest and largest of all the markets in the city, spread over a vast area of five acres. The entry to the market is marked by an ancient Kaman (gate), now reduced to a mere shadow of its past glory.

Mir Alam Market is a great choice for a food-walk, since it is the hub of vibrant specialty food stalls selling vegetables, fruits, meat, spices and grains. Listen to shopkeepers announcing the freshness of their wares and inviting you to sample sweets, pickles and savouries. Try to recognize the aromas of spices wafting in the air and feel free to buy whatever picks your fancy along the way.

Go down memory lane in a local café to taste Irani tea with Hyderabad’s iconic Osmania biscuits and think about the times when the Irani chai house represented the European cafe culture in the city.

Later, wander through the markets surrounding the Charminar, to see street foods like kulchas (fermented wheat bread) and dosas (lentil crepes) being cooked and dished out. Another fascinating experience is seeing the process of ‘vark' (thin edible leaf sheets of gold or silver) making, used to decorate rich Indian sweets and even ‘paan’(betel leaf).

The culinary journey concludes at a popular local restaurant, where you can give in to gluttony with specialties like ‘biryani’, ‘nihari’ and ‘paya’.
