One of Odisha’s natural treasures is Chilika Lake, which is a saltwater lake from July to October and an estuarine water lake from November to February. Covering an area of 1,165 square kilometres, Chilika holds the distinction of being Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon. A narrow marshy and sand-flat strip of 60 kilometres separates it from the wide-open waters of the Bay of Bengal. Apart from many species of local and migratory birds, the wetlands are home to the rare Irrawaddy Dolphin.
Add an edge to your personalized holiday in India with an escape to Chilika Lake. Satapada, located on the southeastern piece of Chilika Lake is home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. Keep your eyes on high alert for encounters with these rare marine mammals, which have a large melon, a blunt, rounded head, a short triangular dorsal fin and broad flippers. The light coloured skin is slightly paler on the underside.
The day tour will also include the chance to see fishermen at work as you travel to the sea-mouth, where the lake meets the expanse of the Bay of Bengal. There will be free time to enjoy the serenity of the beach.
