The living history museum near Chennai in Dakshinachitra gives a chance to catch a glimpse of the traditional lifestyle of communities from different parts of South India. Explore 18 homes relocated from their original locations, each showcasing the architecture, arts & crafts, customs, traditions, rituals and lifestyles of the community that it represents.
The complex of Dakshinachitra has been designed to display the lifestyle of four states, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and a variety of communities including Syrian Christians of Kerala and the Muslim community of Chikmagalur, Karnataka.
Exploring the houses in each zone is like visiting an actual home with actual residents, where every element of a fully functional household is on display, like antique furniture, toys, vessels and idols. The structure of the houses, their roofs, doorways and construction materials offer fascinating insights into vernacular architecture.
On the campus, you can interact with craftsmen who sell indigenous handicrafts and buy artefacts which reflect the unique heritage of their regions, an essential part of any trip to India.
