The culinary canvas of Rajasthan is as rich as its history and as colourful as its people. No visit to its capital city, Jaipur, is complete without a deep dive into gastronomy. Embark on a delicious journey with a food walk in the Pink City, to treat yourself to a kaleidoscope of sights, flavours and aromas, get familiar with the food tradition of the locals and understand the essence of Rajasthani cooking.
The Old Walled City of Jaipur holds a UNESCO World Heritage Site tag for its urban planning and traditional architecture painted pink. Loaded with old-world charm and lively buzz, the area is a maze of trade-specific bazaars (markets), stocking everything from jewellery, textile, crafts to vegetables, fruits and spices. A food walk in the Walled City is like taking a crash course on the culinary heritage of Jaipur and is the most enjoyable way to get acquainted with the ingredients, dishes and cooking techniques of Rajasthan.
Accompanied by an expert guide, you will take a culinary walk through the grid-like streets of the planned city, keeping an eye out for any interesting details. Note vendors tossing together spices and raw material for local street food and stop to taste any that catches your fancy. You will also visit a traditional and legendary family-owned sweet shop, where platters lie laden with sinful, sugary delights. Finally, you will reach the colourful spice market to see piles of locally used spices like Haldi (turmeric) and Jeera (cumin); witness spices being ground to powder and learn how they are stored to keep the flavour and aroma fresh. You can even shop to hour heart’s content and pick up stock to carry home for kitchen experiments.
End with a special tea treat at the ancestral home of a noble family of the erstwhile Jaipur; interact and converse about history, culinary traditions and heirloom recipes.
