TOUR ITINERARY

A series of kingdoms have flourished in Delhi over the centuries, of which history records a total of eight. Some of these are popular for their iconic monuments, while others lie buried in encroachment and urbanization.

The first evidence of a fortified city in Delhi is believed to be Lal Kot, a city founded by Rajput Tomars in the 8th-century. Start with this historic area, famous for being the location of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Qutb Minar, the largest brick tower in the world. The complex is striking with its scattered ruins, incomplete pillars and intricate sculptural details. Lal Kot is also home to Delhi’s first mosque, the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, an example of exquisite Indo-Muslim art.

The next stop is Khirki Village, where you will find the lost city of Jahanpanah and the hidden ‘Window Mosque’. A short distance away, in the city of Siri, a stretch of broken walls is the only testament to a 14th-century fort built by Alauddin Khilji. The nearby Hauz Khas fort complex echoes lost splendour with a well-preserved mosque, Feroz Shah's tomb and a grand water reservoir.

After this, drive through New Delhi, the eighth city built by the British during the colonial era, where you will see all the grand symbols of democratic India, including the President’s House, the Parliament House, and the ceremonial India Gate. En route, you will also cross the ruins of the cities of Shergarh (location of the crumbling Old Fort) and Ferozshah Kotla built by Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq.

Post lunch, the tour reaches its zenith at Shajahanabad (Old Delhi), the city of Shahjahan, designed by his daughter, Jahanara. Experience the vibrant and hectic pace of Chandni Chowk, Asia’a largest bazaar, admire the grandeur of Jama Masjid, India’s most famous mosque and seek serenity at Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib (Sikh shrine). Ponder the heady concoction of history that comes together to make the multi-layered past of Delhi.
