Gentle hills and opal lakes, graceful temples and opulent palaces, Udaipur is undeniably one of the most romantic cities in India. The Old City, perched on the left banks of the Lake Pichola, creates the illusion of floating on the waters, earning it the name of ‘Venice of the East’. A sprawl of narrow, twisting streets hides old marketplaces, ancient shrines and carved mansions, where street stalls heave into action at dawn, readying for the daily flow of familiar faces. Sense the hangover of the past with a heritage walking tour through the Old City of Udaipur.

TOUR ITINERARY

The city walk will start from Delhi Gate and take you through the winding streets of the oldest neighbourhood of Udaipur along the left banks of Lake Pichola. Keep your eyes peeled for old temples, art shops, mansions and other treasures that are sprinkled along the enchanting trail.

You will cross many speciality trade markets stocked with spices, vegetables, bamboo goods, steel, footwear and silverware. Colourful puppets dangle from strings, tie-and-dye textiles stand in piles, and the aroma of freshly cooked sweets and savouries wafts through the air. Diversions are plentiful and so are the chances for uncovering hidden gems in the back alleys. What will you find?

The city walk continues to the Jagdish Temple in the City Palace complex, where richly decorated ceilings, intricately frescoed walls and Indo-Aryan architectural elements create an aura of majesty.

Finally head to the City Palace itself, the largest palace complex in the state of Rajasthan, known for a fine blend of Rajasthani, Mughal, Medieval, European and Oriental architecture. Touring the palace is like entering the pages of Mewari history, where vivid paintings narrate stories of valour, festivities and royalty. Portraiture by celebrated artist Raja Ravi Varma is eye-candy for the arty visitor. History buffs can devote time to the artillery exhibits of the famed warrior, Maharana Pratap, which include his colossal armour weighing 25 kilograms.
