The Bohri Mohalla in Bhendi Bazaari is a warren of streets filled with tempting aromas and centuries-old culinary traditions. Migrants from Gujarat and Yemen, the Dawoodi Bohras (a sect of Shia Muslims) settled in the Bhendi Bazaar neighbourhood of Mumbai in the early 1900s. The community is known for its entrepreneurial acumen, progressive views and characteristic cuisine. Indulge your inner gluttony on this appetizing adventure in an area where Mumbai’s largest urban renewal project is underway, thanks to an initiative by a non-profit organization of the Dawoodi Bohra community.
The communal cuisine of the Dawoodi Bohras is a confluence of Gujarati, Arabic and Middle Eastern cooking styles. The food tradition dictates a pinch of salt to clear the gut and cleanse the palate, followed by desserts and finally the main course. Dawoodi Bohri cuisine is distinctive in its richness, infused with strong spices and a large proposition of non-vegetarian dishes. Classics like Chicken Drumsticks and Bheja (brain) cutlets, elaborate meat dishes and exotic rice preparations are part of every Thaal (platter).
Meat is cooked by boiling with ginger, garlic and chilly paste, instead of grilling, roasting or frying it, and this imparts a succulent texture to it.
During this culinary walk, prep to encounter family recipes, legendary food outlets and unconventional non-vegetarian meats. Alternating between Khara (savoury) and Meetha (sweet) format, you will savour authentic Bohra kebabs, handmade ice-cream at one of Bombay’s oldest ice-cream shops, and a gourd-based dessert, among other delights.

Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
