Punjab’s most celebrated city is epitomized equally in the ethereal and the epicurean. The home of Sikhism's holiest shrine, Amritsar, is one of the country’s most venerated pilgrim destinations. More often than not, the Golden Temple features as the pivot for any trip to the city, followed by the Jallianwala Bagh and ancient markets overflowing with tempting goodies and delectable cuisine. You can’t go wrong with this city walk covering the classic sights of Amritsar.
Every visit to Amritsar starts with the Golden Temple, the world's most revered Sikh shrine. Standing like an encrusted golden jewel box in the middle of a sacred tank, it invites pilgrims by the hordes through the year. During a perambulation of the tank, you will delve deeper into the nuances of the Sikh religion, learn about the sacred objects on display in the complex and feel the meditative effect of the soulful Gurbani (hymns).
The Temple Langar (community kitchen) teeming with volunteers, is a frenzy of activities including chopping, cooking and cleaning. Nutritious, inexpensive, homely food is ladled out to endless diners day in and day out. A meal at the Langar seated cross-legged on floor mats along with hundreds of devotees is an unforgettable experience during a trip to India.
The second site on every itinerary is the memorial site of Jallianwala Bagh, a solemn reminder of the massacre of 300 Indian civilians by British soldiers during India's struggle for independence. Wandering through the garden complex, imagining the tragic episode is a moving experience.
Head for colourful bazaars of the Old City, where a maze of streets bustles with crowds throughout the day. Covering the area on foot and by battery-operated rickshaw, you will spot heritage wooden mansions of traders, which were built here during the 1500s. Along the walking tour, visit the ruins of a small fortress, Qila Ahluwalia, where wealthy merchants have their homes and textile shops. Other noteworthy pitstops include Akharas (resting places for spiritual ascetics), Darshan Deori, from where the Gurus Arjun and Hargobind viewed the Golden Temple, Baba Bohar, a sacred banyan tree and The Town Hall. You will also explore the various speciality markets of the Old City that flaunt embroidered fabrics, footwear, jewellery, bangles, foodstuffs and utensils.
As part of the walking tour, satiate your tastebuds with some of the traditional street foods of Amritsar. Think bubbling vats of dal, smouldering hot tandoors and men serving platters at breakneck speeds. Trying Kulcha Chhole (flour bread with chickpeas gravy and Jalebi (deep-frying flour pretzel, soaked in sugar syrup) are almost obligatory.
