The black silt beaches and dense mangrove forests of Chorao Island give it a unique character that is the opposite of a more familiar Goa. On the tourist map because of seasonal migratory birds and the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, the idyllic island of Chorao hides another lesser-known treasure to delight wildlife enthusiasts…a community of wetland otters and a conservation research centre, Wild Otters Research.
Cycle from the Divja Circle in Panaji to Ribandar, over the 380-year old Ponte de Linhares Causeway to board a Goan ferry across the Mandovi River. The destination of the day is the riverine island of Chorao, the biggest of 17 islands in the Mandovi.
It is believed the island has a long history of inhabitation, starting with Indo-Aryan migrants who settled here during the 3rd and 4th centuries. Originally Brahmins, they later converted to Christianity following the Portuguese invasion.
Riding through the sleepy streets of the village, feel the refreshing rural ambience, still untouched by modernity. Brightly painted Portuguese cottages and graceful whitewashed churches stand as reminders of past European linkages and add delightful dashes of colour to the verdant green surroundings. Local landmarks that are on the tourist radar include The Chapel of St.Jerome, St Bartholomew’s Church, Sateri Goleshwar Temple, and Devi Katyayani Temple. The tour includes a halt at a village eatery for a traditional Goan breakfast. Following this, ride up to a hilltop shrine to be rewarded with a pristine panorama. A ferry transports you to Pomburpa, from where you can savour the sweetness of cycling along a riverside road, then back to Panaji.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
