The Pink City of Jaipur and the entire state of Rajasthan is synonymous with traditions and festivals in the backdrop of royal heritage, lavish havelis (mansions) and intricate architecture. One of the liveliest customs of Jaipur is kite flying, which is earmarked for the winter months of November to February. This is a time when skies are a riot of colours with thousands of beautiful paper kites. Associated with the harvest festival of ‘Makar Sankranti’ (harvest festival) in January, kite flying is an ancient tradition with a royal connection.
Jaipur’s 200-year old kite-flying tradition links back to the legend of Sawai Ram Singh II, a former Maharaja of Jaipur, who was a kite-flying enthusiast. After being crowned as the ruler, he invited kite-makers to settle in the city and even ordered the construction of a separate market for them. It is said that the Maharaja’s kites were a class apart, made of fine muslin cloth and adorned with tiny tinkling bells. No wonder, kite flying continues as a passionate sport in the royal city till today…joyful expressions, bright attire and all. Thousands of multi-coloured diamond-shaped kites glide across the clear sky, as people fight kite wars with gusto, celebrate with festive sweets, enjoy delectable savouries and sway to cheerful music.
Get oriented with the old city bazaar (market) through a guided walking tour. Slip into local mode as you hunt for a kite that catches your fancy from the dozens of kite shops. Identifying the thread to be used is an integral part of the festivities as it would decide the fate of your kite when it glides high.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. The food, chef, and his wife were all exceptional and made for a lovely evening. Also, our expectations were definitely exceeded at a private residence, spending time with the elephants and lunching. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
