Mewar’s royal past is rich with the history of storming armies, formidable fortresses and heroic rulers. These stories of valour live on in Mewar even today, through the ancient art of Damascening (or Koftgari), the art of ornamenting ceremonious armoury and weaponry. Brought to India by Persian craftsmen during the Mughal rule in the 16th-century, Damascening flourished under the patronage of the Mewar royals. Udaipur is an ideal place to learn about the fine craftsmanship that goes into creating these decorated, deadly weapons of war. Consider this art tour a part of your luxury holiday in India.
The Persian art of Damascening, inlay of gold and silver wire on metal objects by soldering, hammering and wedging, was adopted in India during the Mughal rule. Udaipur was one of the main centres of crafting functional, ornamented weaponry for warriors, including swords, sword handles, sword sheaths, shields, knives, armour and helmets.
Damascening, called Koftgari in local parlance, still survives in a few regions of Udaipur, Jaipur and Chittorgarh. You will visit a local outfit in the city to see Koftgari handcrafted products being made by skilled artisans. Apart from traditional weapons, many popular items like jewellery boxes, betel containers and other decorative artefacts are also available.
A dagger or knife with an elaborately carved handle seems less dangerous when used as a paper-cutter. Bring back a regal piece to cherish forever and support a living heritage of Mewar with this day tour.

Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
