La Martiniere, designed by the Frenchman Major-General Claude Martin as a palatial home is one of India’s most popular public schools and the world’s largest in area, surpassing the size of the President’s House in New Delhi. Explore the school complex and learn about its architecture, history and legends in this offbeat tour in the city of Lucknow.
The history of La Martiniere goes back to the late 1700s when it was a sprawling mansion of Major General Claude Martin. Reincarnated as a school in 1845, it came into focus during India’s first war of independence in 1857 and was even awarded battle honours for its role in the defence of Lucknow in 1935.
Stone lions,Grecians culptures, gargoyles, turrets, ramparts, fluted pillars and bas-reliefs grant the structure an almost monument-like stature. Art, antiquities and stained glass windows in the chapel are just a few of the elements worth seeking out. The Boys’ College has starred in many Bollywood movies such asShatranj Ke Khiladi, Gadar: EkPrem Katha and Anwar.
The canteen’s bun-kebabs and sheermaals figure on the list of must-eats in the city. Sunday Bunday’s bite-sized samosas and potato curry on buns called BunTacks are much-awaited delicacies for alumni.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. The food, chef, and his wife were all exceptional and made for a lovely evening. Also, our expectations were definitely exceeded at a private residence, spending time with the elephants and lunching. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
