The riverfront of Agra at the height of the Mughal Empire was the epitome of a flourishing, powerful capital. Adorning both banks were many lush gardens with pretty pavilions, tinkling fountains and flowering trees. Emperors and nobles luxuriated in these heavenly green spaces, listening to melodic music, participating in intellectual debates, soaking in poetry recitations and conducting business and political decisions. Visit a few of the 44 original Mughal gardens to imagine their intoxicating ambience and learn of the inventive water engineering skills of the past centuries.
The 16th and 17th-century Yamuna riverfront of Agra was the private landscape of nobility, a garden enclave to accommodate pavilions and tombs along both banks. These pleasure gardens, rich with shady walkways and flowing water channels were visited by Mughal emperors and their families by boat. Fragrant flowers and blossoming fruit trees made the gardens a sensual retreat. Terrace pavilions, corner towers and projecting balconies offered panoramic river views and cooling breeze. Slip into the Mughal past with a tour of a few riverfront gardens in Agra.
The garden of Ram Bagh, built in the Persian style by Babur, has the typical Charbagh (four gardens) divided by canals, to represent the garden of paradise. Abundant waterways and fountains allude to the concept of an idyllic retreat, where the Emperor would have connected with his inner zen.
At the gardens of the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, an ancient water system of channels is still in operation. Commissioned by Empress Nur Jahan for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg in the early 1620s, the four equal square-shaped gardens have an elegant mausoleum in the middle. Flower beds line the walkways and the pathway to the tomb is bordered by a row of cypress trees.
Of all the restored gardens on the riverfront, Mehtab Bagh (Moonlit Garden) takes the crown, for its uninterrupted view of the Taj Mahal, especially on moonlit nights. Originally a fruit orchard, it is now a vast green space of long walkways, open pavilions, limpid pools and soft fountains, adorned with symmetrically planted trees and pathways.
