The ancient capital of Awadh (Oudh) laid out on the western banks of River Gomti saw the heights of glory and fame under the reign of the Nawabs during the 18th & 19th centuries. When the British annexed it in 1856 and made it their administrative capital, a very different history was on the cards. The first fight for independence, infamously termed as ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ in 1857-58 was destined to play a significant role in the struggle for an independent India; learn all about the key players and the significant milestones achieved by the freedom fighters.

TOUR ITINERARY

Lucknow’s 1857 Mutiny was one of the major events that changed the course of the subcontinent’s history as one of the most important of the revolts that swept across the entire country.

Awadh (or Oudh) became a critical part of the East India Company’s infantry. The armed and militarised population of Lucknow was almost 200,000 in strength. Ultimately this proved to be the proverbial Achilles Heel of the British Raj, when the locals rose in revolt against the tyranny. The siege of May 1857 was inevitable.

Take an immersive and addictive history lesson that runs you through the entire sequence of the high drama that ensued in Lucknow during 1857-58. Following the routes of Henry Havelock, James Outram and Colin Campbell through the city, you will be able to relive the moments as they would have occurred, leading to heavy casualties on both ends. The tour will include the main areas where the action was concentrated during the siege of Lucknow.
