Once a magnet for traders and travellers during the era of the burgeoning spice trade, it was a common sight to see Arab and Chinese ships loaded with silk, honey and horses in exchange for black pepper in Mattancherry. The charming area still retains its essence as a culture cauldron, where 15 different communities live in harmony. Stroll its streets to get acquainted with the diverse immigrant communities who call it home and trace the route to Cochin’s prosperity and cosmopolitanism.
It was the spice trade that put Mattancherry and Cochin on the world map, spiralled the city into fame and prosperity, leaving a long-lasting and profound impact on the history of the globe. Thanks to a multi-cultural immigrant population that settled in Mattancherry over several centuries, it boasts of a rich tapestry of heritage, unlike any other place in the country.
Jew Street in Mattancherry still bears testimony to one of the early migrant communities in Mattancherry – the Jews, who built synagogues and mansions in the area. Mappilas (Arab Muslims) traders, Konkani (from India’s western coast) money lenders and bankers, Gujarati (from the state of Gujarat) and Cutchi Memon (from Kutch in Rajasthan) traders, Hindu Malayali labourers, Latin Christians fishermen and Tamil Brahmin money lenders and cooks (for the royal families) were some of the other communities who made Mattancherry their home.

I must say everything was planned to perfection. Each guide in every city was knowledgeable; especially the guide you arranged for us in Udaipur. Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. The food, chef, and his wife were all exceptional and made for a lovely evening. Also, our expectations were definitely exceeded at a private residence, spending time with the elephants and lunching. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
