Kissing the shores of the Arabian Sea, the magical megalopolis of Mumbai pulsates with an energy that never ebbs, truly justifying its earned nickname, ‘Maximum City’. The kaleidoscopic history of India’s commercial and financial capital goes back to its early beginnings as an imperial outpost, the reminders of which still define its South precinct. Horniman Circle is associated with many milestones, which give insight into how a group of seven islands morphed into Bombay, and eventually Mumbai.

TOUR ITINERARY

Flash-back into the era when cattle once grazed freely on the patch of ‘Bombay Green’ (now Horniman Circle) in South Mumbai. The heart of the colonial city was spread out from Marine Drive seafront, across Churchgate Station, Flora Fountain, all the way till the Town Hall. The Horniman Circle (or Elphinstone Circle as it was called previously), is significant for being the site of the first planned garden circle in Bombay.

This was the place where cotton merchants who traded under a large banyan tree, pitched in to start the Native Stock Exchange, which later formed the Bombay Stock Exchange. The Classical facade of the Town Hall, (now Asiatic Library) is impressive with its wide steps and eight Doric columns. The place is a bibliophile’s heaven with shelves loaded with rare books and manuscripts. The literary at heart should not miss the opportunity to flip through the pages of Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’, one of the two original copies that exist in the world.

The walking tour of Horniman Circle throws up interesting legends of many firsts in the city. Learn about the first tenant of Bombay; the first Anglican Church; Bombay’s first stock market; the first Firang (foreign) God and the first Firang (foreign) anti-national of Bombay. But above everything, it stands in the cacophonic of Mumbai’s business district as a silent reminder of the green oasis that it once was.
