It is a lesser-known fact that Kerala has a huge collection of murals based on ancient Indian mythologies, at par with Rajasthan, some of which date back in time to the 8th-century. The murals of Kerala are heavily influenced by ancient Dravidian rituals and are works of art in their own right with delicate and refined craftsmanship. This tour is ideal for art lovers and heritage buffs.
Take a walking tour of mural art in the Kerala Museum with an expert mural artiste to look beyond the images and understand the complexity of the creations and come to grips with the lines, figures, colours and symbolism that combine to bring alive, the entire concept.
All over Kerala, you can find superlative examples of murals in the temples and palaces, where ancient mythology and devotion come alive on walls. The Mattancherry Palace has an extensive collection of murals with scenes from the Hindu epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The recurring theme of the murals is the Hindu God Venugopal (the flute-wielding deity) and his past-times on earth. However, the painting in the Raja’s bedroom portrays Lord Shiva with his consort Parvathi along with his retinue which is rather rare.
You will notice that the most commonly used pigments in these murals are yellow, green, red, white, blue and black. All pigments, brushes and gum are organically made using natural materials like minerals and plants. Notch it up by trying to paint a mural yourself and take it home as a souvenir of your Kerala holidays.

As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
