Traditional arts and crafts of a region offer riveting revelations into the local lifestyle, ancient history and indigenous culture. Pick this engrossing experience, where you will venture into Vilachery, located at the southern edge of Madurai. The little village is home to families who have been engaged in an industry of clay-making and papier mâché dolls for centuries. Witness a display of inventiveness, artistry and hand dexterity as residents convert ordinary lumps of mud into extraordinary objects of art.
Located at the southern fringes of the Temple City of Madurai, the village of Vilachery is an open-air workshop for pottery in all its various shapes. But the highlight of the sleepy village is the archetypal clay dolls, which include idols of deities, Gods and Goddesses. Embark on this offbeat tour if you are curious to learn about local arts and crafts in Madurai and see artisans at work.
During the tour, you will see how an age-old tradition is still thriving, thanks to the 200 craft families that reside in the village. The toys of Vilachery are made of clay and glazed with soil sourced from a nearby tank. Dolls are made using moulds, baked in a fire and hand-painted to add facial expressions, garments and accessories.
As part of the excursion, you will have the chance to stop at a temple dedicated to the village Gods, adorned with colourful terracotta horses. Lose yourself to mythological tales, understand local traditions and feel the Vilachery vibe make a place in your heart forever.

As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
