The story of the City of Nawabs is inextricably linked to The Siege of Awadh when Awadh took centre-stage during the freedom struggle of 1857 against the British East India Company. The stage of the revolution was the British Residency, the symbol of imperial power at the time. Relive the time of a landmark bloody battle with this exhaustive tour of the ruins of the British Residency. Occupying a quiet space in the heart of the old city, the silent brick ruins washed in the colours of valour will trigger a patriotic string in your heart.
Built between 1775 and 1800, the Residency complex was home to the British Resident General. During the first war of Indian independence of 1857 in Lucknow, 8000 sepoys and several locals stormed the Residency, which was seen as the symbol of British tyranny. The bloody battle that ensued for six months saw heavy casualties on both sides until the British were forced to finally evacuate the complex.
Wander through the 33-acre complex of bullet-holed crumbling ruins and cannon damaged walls. Imagine the tragic saga unfolding before you amidst the bombardment of shells and the smell of gunpowder.
Some of the famous buildings that you can see in the Residency include Sago’s House, DrFayrer’s House, Brigade Mets and Kanpur Battery. There is a graveyard commemorating named and unnamed soldiers who gave their lives in the landmark event that was a key precursor to India’s independence struggle. The 1857 Memorial Museum on the premises displays rare photographs, lithographs, paintings, documents and memorabilia about the British Raj.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
