The commercial capital of Kerala, Kochi, has been pinned to the world map for centuries since it became a trading port for spice merchants and started playing a significant role in the world economy. But the intriguing history of Cochin has many other dimensions, including its royal roots. Trail the tale of the Cochin Royal Family, learn fascinating trivia and have the privilege of sipping tea with its blue blood.
The Cochin Royal Family is one of the most prominent royal dynasties of Kerala and is inextricably linked with the evolution of the state through the annals of history. This tour allows you to learn about the origins of the Cochin Royal Family, its journey through colonial times and up to the formation of independent India.
Start your day tour from the Hill Palace (Kanakakkunnu Palace), which was the imperial seat of the erstwhile Cochin rulers. Sprawling over an area of 52 acres, the palace complex comprises 49 buildings designed in line with the architectural style indigenous to Kerala, including clay tiled roofing. Inside the museum, you can pore over ancient relics and heirlooms chronicling events in the erstwhile kingdom, catalogues on biodiversity of the region and even wooden models of temples and displays on art-forms and festivals of Kochi.
Later, continue to the residential quarter to study traditional and colonial architecture. The old bathing area with a long corridor of white pillars topped with a sloping wooden roof is a delight just to walk through. The oldest building in the complex is a single-storeyed ‘Ettukettu’ in traditional Kerala style, dating from the 1850s. Don’t miss the ‘attached’ pond, temple and ‘Uralppura’ (building for pounding paddy).
At the end of the tour, look forward to high-tea with members of the royal family, to add a special touch to your exclusive holiday in India.
