Kolkata’s artistic and cultural lineage is best showcased in Sovabazar, the effervescent hub of Bengali traditions. Known as the ‘Black Town’ during the British colonial era, the neighbourhood is the best place to seek out a wide variety of architectural styles in the busy streets, including Islamic, Bengali, Victorian and Baroque. A walk through Sovabazar is the ideal way to immerse in authentic Bengali culture and cuisine.
A slice of the local life of Kolkata is best experienced with a guided walk through the narrow streets of Savobazar. You will feel the vibes of the busy bazaar, where multiple trades thrive, and note the architectural details in the crumbling ancestral homes typical of the area as you accompany your professional guide.
Sovabazar takes its name from SovabazarRajbari, one of the oldest palatial mansions houses in the city, belonging to a prominent zamindar, Raja Nabakrishna Deb. The 18th-century royal residence is associated with the famous Kolkata Durga Puja celebrations held in October-November. Built with a mix of Moorish, Hindu and colonial styles of architecture, the mansion has charming features like a centrally located open courtyard, arched columns, Tuscan pillars and a ruined NaachGhar (courtesan’s dance hall). The interiors boast vintage hookahs, glittering chandeliers and rare memorabilia.
The tour includes the opportunity to relish a meal of Bengali specialities, including seafood and local sweets.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
