It is believed that the ancient city of Ekamra Kshetra in Bhubaneshwar, was adorned with over 700 sandstone temples during the 6th and 13th century, each showcasing exemplary sculptures in the Kalinga architectural style. Sprawled out under the cool shade of hundreds of mango groves, the sacred city included as many as 45 villages and several holy tanks. The revered 128-feet high Lingaraj Temple, still commands centre-stage in this holy neighbourhood, along with many other ancient temples that survive, offer a compelling glimpse into the religious and artistic heritage of the city.
The oldest part of Bhubaneswar, Ekamra Kshetra (forest of mango trees), is like an open-air museum with an ensemble of antiquarian temples, which date back to various eras ranging from the 6th to 13th centuries. Carved in sandstone, each temple is a graceful creation in the Kalinga style, every inch studded with the finest of sculptural details.
Imagine teams of sculptors chiselling away these elegant houses of God, devoted to the pursuit of perfection, getting better and better with each model that slowly came to life. Embark on a city walk to decode the typical architectural style of the temples, and get familiar with the evolution in temple design over the ages, starting with the earliest Parasurameswara Temple built in the 650 CE, which features a beehive-shaped tower with a porch in front.
As part of the walking tour around the streets, you will chance upon bazaars around the temples, where vendors sell flowers and religious paraphernalia. In temple kitchens, devotees chop piles of vegetables and stir huge pots for daily meals. The walk is peppered with legends that take you back to the days when the area dripped with divinity, and life revolved around religion.

Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
