The capital of Rajasthan is one of India’s most important craft centres, known for its metalwork, hand-painted clay pottery, exquisite jewellery and block-printed cotton. The textile block printing of Jaipur is rooted in an ancient tradition passed down through generations of native craftspeople. Wooden blocks and organic dyes are the hallmarks of this artistic heritage, where a single piece of fabric is completed with painstaking effort over days and even weeks. One of the most prominent hubs of this age-old craft in India is Sanganer, home of the Chippa community.
While Jaipur is an ideal base to visit the home of block printing, Sanganer is perfect to immerse in a craft-rich experience. Inspired by the heritage and cultivated by royal patronage, the dainty craft of hand block printing has acquired name and fame across the world as a symbol of Indian culture. Authentic hand-blocked prints of Sanganer stand out with their fine motifs and superior quality. Earthy and ethnic, these simple designs usually reflect the local flora and fauna like the sunflower and rose. Figures of deities and folk scenes are also popular.
The town of Sanganer is like one big textile workshop, where lanes and lanes are filled with shops and warehouses of soft cotton fabric; families ceaselessly print away on meters and meters of cotton fabric in their homes and freshly printed creations hang on clotheslines everywhere you look.
As part of the city walk, you will accompany your guide to a leading workshop, where you can interact with the owners to understand the process of hand-block printing as well as the evolution of the craft over time. Witness the Sanganeri work in progress, right from the fabric being prepared, being pinned onto printing tables and layered with sand and water. The real magic begins when wooden blocks on raised grooves are stamped meticulously on the textile, filling it with colours and patterns from end to end. You will be shown antique blocks and old textile collections from different centres across India. Meet the block makers and printers who represent this wonderful heritage and come back with a customised Sanganeri print.
