Amritsar’s epicentre, the Old City, is a hive of activity, both because of the Golden Temple and the iconic eateries in the area. The ancient neighbourhood has been favoured since the 16th-century, for its location on a route connecting India with Asia and the Middle East. Delicately carved wooden mansions of traders still stand testimony to a flourishing past and colourful bazaars buzz with textiles, artefacts and foodstuffs. Disappear into the inviting maze of the streets, where every corner throws up enticing surprises, friendly vendors flaunt their wares and drifting aromas decide which way your nose will take you.
The one-kilometre long stretch of Amritsar’s revamped Heritage Street welcomes you with pleasant pink facades, lampposts, statues and fountains. Start the walking tour by accompanying your guide to Bazaar Ram Bagh, a market of grains, pulses, jaggery, cooking oils, seasonal vegetables and lip-smacking pickles. Succumb to the temptations as you explore the area on foot, then hop onto a rickshaw and head through the scrap metal market, fish market and Hall Bazaar. En route, you will see the Town Hall and the Gurudwara Saragarhi (Sikh place of worship).
The city walk continues on foot to the ruins of Qila Ahluwalia, a small fortress, where wealthy cloth merchants beguile with piles of textiles and embroidered fabric. There will be a scheduled stop at Jalebiwala Chowk, to give in to the temptations of piping hot, crisp Jalebis (fried sweet pretzels).
Look forward to visiting traditional Akharas (resting places for spiritual ascetics) before carrying on to Chuda Bazaar (Bangle Market), a favourite with wedding shoppers, Bartan Bazaar (utensils market) and Guru Bazaar (jewellery market). Stop at Darshan Deori, the memorial spot where the Sikh Gurus Arjun and Hargobind viewed the Golden Temple and go on to Baba Bohar, a centuries-old sacred banyan tree right in the middle of the Old City, revered for a small shrine.
