Delhi is not just the political nerve-centre of the world’s biggest democracy, but also the most populous city of India, with a history as remarkable as some of the greatest ancient cities in the world. Crumbling ruins hide in plain sight and heritage monuments of a multi-layered past stand cheek-to-cheek with the sleek architecture of a fast-paced metropolis. Contemporary and classic co-exist in surprising harmony and are epitomized in the two contrasting areas of New Delhi and Old Delhi.
Start with New Delhi, the city built by the British to showcase their imperial power. Get familiar with the district designed by Edwin Lutyens, featuring wide roads lined with shady trees, colonial-style whitewashed bungalows, roundabouts and symmetrical layouts. New Delhi is dotted with grand icons of democratic India like Rajpath, President's House, India Gate, Parliament House and governmental offices. At the centre of New Delhi stands Connaught Place, a British-era commercial-cum-shopping area designed in two concentric circles, with collonaded Georgian-style buildings. Vintage cinemas and legendary coffee houses add to the old-world charm.
Travel to the historic heart, Old Delhi, named as Shahjahanabad after Mughal Emperor, Shahjahan. The legacy of the Mughal dynasty lives on in Old Delhi through majestic monuments like the Red Fort and Jama Masjid (the largest mosque in India). In the ancient neighbourhood of Chandi Chowk, designed by Shahjahan’s daughter, Jahanara, narrow streets are filled with bazaars (markets), historic eating joints and intricately carved mansions. Favourite pitstops include Dariba Kalan (silver market), Kinari Bazaar (wedding market) and Paranthewali Gali (Lane of Parathas – a kind of bread). A sprinkling of Hindu temples, Jain derasars, churches and mosques reflect the multi-cultural lineage of the neighbourhood. One of the prominent attractions is Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, where Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, was killed for refusing to convert to Islam.
