Lucknow’s downtown is epitomized in the buzzing main shopping thoroughfare of Hazratganj. The beating heart of the city, where locals have been shopping, eating and hanging out for centuries, it is a charming district with Victorian architecture, historical old shops and collonaded arcades. Snazzy emporiums line both sides of the broad street that is always pulsating with action. Traditional handicrafts, contemporary fashion labels, Awadhi classics or modern fast food, whatever be the agenda, Ganj-ing is every Lucknawi’s ‘go-to’.

TOUR ITINERARY

Inspired by the ambience of Chowringhee in Kolkata, NawabSaadat Ali Khan II commissioned Hazratganj as an upmarket residential neighbourhood in the growing city of Lucknow with European-style mansions designed to impress esteemed visitors. During NawabAmjad Ali Shah’s time, Hazratganj acquired a brand new persona as a vast market for imported goods.

It was when the British arrived, that the buildings were remodelled as stucco white mansions with Victorian-style elements, to remind them of their home across the continent. Those were the days of horse-drawn carriages, glitzy ballrooms, quaint tea-houses and tailoring outlets. Hazratganj was also the location for Ring Theatre, a hub of entertainment reserved exclusively for the Britishers.

Today, Hazratganj has regained some of its lost glory with a fresh coat of paint, newly installed stone pavements, upgraded balustrades and lanterns and black-white store signage. Locals linger in coffee houses, browse in bookshops, queue up at snack outlets, shop or just unwind. Soak up the vintage appeal, relax and find your kind of ‘take-me-homes’.

The walk includes a visit to Sibtainabad Imambara, which houses the mausoleum of Nawab of Awadh, Amjad Ali Shah and is a heritage monument.
