It is almost unimaginable that the ‘City of Dreams’ was once a bunch of rustic fishing villages. Even more unreal is the thought that many such quaint villages still thrive in an urbanscape that is epitomized in glossy skyscrapers, multinational conglomerates and the starry movie world of Bollywood. One such charming alternative world exists in the Matharpacady village hidden in the sprawling suburb of Mazagaon. Soak in the old-world charm of this little hamlet, where Portuguese architecture and laid-back lifestyle takes you back to simpler times.
Cultures and faiths collide to create a colourful canvas in the self-contained village of Matherpacady, where resident East-Indian Catholics, Goans, Maharashtrians and Bohri Muslims live together in harmony. Vibrantly painted Portuguese-style houses flaunt wrought iron railings, wood-panelled floors, lace-curtained windows and airy porches. Tiny alleys twist into each other, revealing hidden gems like a small chapel, tiny shops and a huge abandoned well.
Over 400 years, many of these bright and cheerful homes have been testimony to changing times. The fruiting orchards are long gone, but the soul of the village remains untouched, as before. Many families living here for generations have endless stories, curious secrets and mysterious legends share.
This offbeat city walk takes you through the bylanes, catching glimpses of everyday routine, while you learn about a twice fruiting mango tree; 125-year-old oratory of the saint of epidemics; lesser-known freedom fighters; and the history of East Indians.

Thank you for a wonderful trip to Kerala. We loved the village life walk and Fort Cochin walk. The backwater cruise in a traditional country boat was an incredible experience. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and was exceptionally well taken care of. The cooking class in Jaipur was extremely enjoyable. The food, chef, and his wife were all exceptional and made for a lovely evening. Also, our expectations were definitely exceeded at a private residence, spending time with the elephants and lunching. Thanks for organising a great trip to Lucknow and Varanasi. The hotels at both the places were excellent; we had a great guide in Varanasi who went beyond the designated tour route and showed us around. The food tour in Lucknow was amazing and re-discovering the Awadhi Cuisine was a great experience – the kebabs were out of the world!
It was a terrific experience to spot the King of the jungle in all their glory at Gir. We had a very good experience overall.
